Hate Working Out? Encourage Yourself In the Second Person
Research from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, found that people who encouraged themselves with a brief pep talk in the second person (“you can do it”, “give it your best shot”, “you’ll finish”) had more ambition when it came to working out and exercising. The reasoning comes from the encouragement we receive from teachers, family members, or coaches, when we were growing up. This conditioning increased our optimism to go the extra mile when we’re talked to in the second person. So go ahead, give yourself a pep talk.
