Nauset Lighthouse

The Nauset Lighthouse was constructed in 1877, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. As a popular tourist attraction, the lighthouse sits on the Cape Code National Seashore near Eastham, Massachusetts.

As a recognizable icon, the Nauset Lighthouse has some history, and one noteworthy move to it’s story. Over many years erosion occurred along the seashore and the original location of this lighthouse had to be moved. Therefore, in 1996 the lighthouse was moved a few feet inland to protect and preserve it’s structure given concerns about coastal erosion. This move has enabled visitors traveling from all over the country to see the historical lighthouse.

Located along a picturesque overlook of the Cape Code Seashore, getting to the lighthouse is an easy walk up a dirt path to it’s location. As visitor after visitor stand before this lighthouse and look up at the vivid blue sky and quaint structure, it’s symmetric banding around it’s body in red and white colors makes it such a scenic sight. It’s for this reason that illustrating this lighthouse for many artist, including myself, is so appealing and worth remembering as a popular tourist attraction.

Given this lighthouse has been preserved to an almost timeless stature, it’s worth a trip if you haven’t seen it in person. While this lighthouse has survived an incredible move, it does keep the light shining for visitors and serves as a private aid for boats and fishing fleets close to the shore.
